PRESS RELEASE
26 June 2010
Statement by Archbishop Dermot Clifford, Apostolic
Administrator in the Diocese of Cloyne
Today Father Bill Bermingham offered his resignation to me as Designated
Person for the Safeguarding of Children in the Diocese of Cloyne. I
have accepted Father Bermingham's resignation.
I wish to thank Father Bermingham for the unstinting and selfless commitment
which he has given to this role on behalf of the diocese during a very
painful period.
I have been witness to the integrity of Father Bermingham's motivation
in seeking to rebuild trust with people who have been harmed by priests
of the diocese and, to help in their healing. The safeguarding of children
in Church ministry has been his consistent priority and concern.
I have requested Father John McCarthy to act on a temporary basis in
the role of Designated Person on behalf of the diocese.
PRESS RELEASE
26 June 2010
Statement by Father Bill Bermingham, Diocese of
Cloyne
From the recent media coverage of a case involving an allegation of
child sexual abuse made against a priest of the Diocese of Cloyne, it
is clear that my handling of the particular case has caused further
distress to the complainant. It is vital that any person occupying the
role of designated officer/delegate within the Church should have the
complete confidence of victims of child sexual abuse and of persons
wishing to report abuse. This is an absolute value. My handling of this
particular case has, despite my best intentions, served to undermine
that confidence. For this reason and in the interests of those who have
been offended against - and in the interests of the Church’s policy
for the safeguarding of children - I have asked Archbishop Dermot Clifford
to relieve me of the role of Designated Officer/Delegate in the Diocese
of Cloyne. I very much regret the distress occasioned by my handling
of this case.
I encourage any person who has suffered abuse to report it to the relevant
Church authorities, to An Garda Síochána or to the Health
Service Executive.
Bill Bermingham, PP

A Time for Lay People
Return to the Source - Rediscovering the meaning of our baptism
with Fr. Michael Drumm
Pontifical Irish College, Rome
18 - 24 July 2010
The church teaches that lay involvement flows from the sacraments of
baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. An important task facing the church
today is a rediscovery of the meaning of our baptismal calling.
Rome is a fascinating place to rediscover the meaning of baptism, confirmation
and Eucharist in the light of the experience of the early
Christian community.
Fr. Michael Drumm will conduct a course for lay people on rediscovering
the meaning of our Baptism, at the Irish College, Rome for one week, July
18th - 24th. Lectures in the mornings with liturgies and visits to significant
sites in Rome and beyond will combine to deepen an appreciation of these
sacraments as a participation in the saving mystery of Christ Jesus and
as a call to service. Lectures, liturgies and visits to significant sites
in Rome and beyond will combine to deepen an appreciation of these sacraments
as a participation in the saving mystery of Christ Jesus and as a call
to service.
The cost is 870. A deposit of 250 is required
to secure a place. Rooms are ensuite. Please arrange your own travel to
Rome. Transfer to/from the
airport in Rome entry fees, excursions in and beyond Rome, lectures and
half-board are included in the cost. Those who wish to arrive prior to
18 July
or remain after 24 July may do so subject to availability.
Michael Drumm is a priest of the diocese of Elphin (Ireland). Formerly
Director of the Mater Dei Institute of Education in Dublin, he is now
Chairman of the Catholic Schools Partnership. He has lectured widely on
sacramental theology and on faith and ministry in the contemporary world.
His publications include Passage to Pasch (1998) and, with Tom Gunning,
the two volume A Sacramental People (1999).
