Choral Event at Mallow
On Nov.21st., St. Mary’s Church, Mallow was the setting for a recital of sacred and other music by Anúna, the Irish choral ensemble established by Michael McGlynn, in 1987. The event was organised by Arts Alliance, Mallow, sponsored by Cork Co. Council and drew a crown of several hundred for a beautiful afternoon of classical and folk choral music by this chamber choir which enjoys and international reputation.
The music is written specifically for the choir by composer and founder Michael McGlynn.
The recital was visual as well as vocal as the choir members moved through the church, using candles and costume to create a magic experience in the candlelit church for their extraordinary voices. From alto to bass voices the church acoustics reverberated to their sounds in an unforgettable manner.
Micheal’s settings of mediaeval chants formed the first section of the concert, the singers weaving their harmonies with intricate skill. The second part of the event moved into settings in the tradition of folk carols, including the Irish tradition of caroling. Lastly some familiar numbers, including Balfe’s “I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls”.
The choir leader, Michael McGlynn, expressed appreciation to the Mallow Arts Alliance for inviting them and to the Church for providing the setting for their first visit to Mallow. He observed that the acoustics of the church were of an exceptional order for such an event and hoped that an opportunity for a return visit would arise.
